Krystian Kamiński:
In France, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were to train. By the time they got there, more than 1,600 Ukrainians had deserted. During the training itself, tens of others decided to look for a better life. In Poland, the thought of creating the Ukrainian Legion ended in failure before it even started. Chaos continues. If Ukrainians don't want to fight for their own country, it's hard to anticipate individual else to fight for them.

One may ask why Ukrainians do not want to fight for their country? There may be as many reasons as people who have deserted, but on the basis of erstwhile experiences and relationships, any of the most common can be mentioned:
– no recognition with country/nation
– not everyone in Ukraine is Ukrainian.
– the feeling that they should fight and die for oligarchs and corrupt authorities
– Convincing that Ukraine is only a tool in the hands of NATO/West to fight Russia means that it is not a war in the interests of their country
– cowardice – many of those who deserted most likely would have found themselves in gangs attacking civilians alternatively than in a regular army fighting a strong opponent (analogy from the past of the CNS-UPA).
