On Thursday, 21 November, the consultation of the programme basis on wellness education – a fresh subject whose introduction to Polish schools is planned by the Ministry of National Education. Despite the protests of 100 social and household organisations, the MEN remains firm and wants to replace optional upbringing into a mandatory household subject, containing disturbing content. On 1 December in Warsaw there will be a demonstration of opposition to the plans of the ministry.
MEN assumptions
According to the MEN plans, wellness education is to be carried out mandatoryly from the 2025/2026 school year in grades IV-VIII of primary schools and in secondary schools. The subjects will be measured 1 hr a week in grades IV-VIII of primary schools (in grades VIII no longer than the end of January of a given school year due to the eighth grade exam) and 2 hours in grades I-III in general schools.
According to the glossauczyalski.pl portal, the programming basis for wellness education consists of specified departments as values and attitudes, physical health, physical activity, nutrition, intellectual health, social health, puberty (primary school), sexual health, environmental health, the net and prevention of addictions and the wellness strategy (over-basic schools).
The fresh subject is to be taught by biology teachers, physical education, household education, psychologists and teachers who have completed studies or postgraduate studies in wellness education and have educational training.
Propaganda veil
The management of MEN, including Barbara Nowacka, defends the introduction of sexual education as part of wellness education, claiming that dislike of these content is equivalent to dislike of education and prevention in everyday life. This is not actual – the representatives of household organisations point out.
– The Minister is aware that he wants to pass on to children and young people non-acceptable content to many parents, interfere in an highly delicate and intimate region of life, which is sexuality, and in a strategy of values that parents want to pass on to children, so he is propagandaally obscured by the themes that are widely agreed that their implementation would be useful. This is highly unfair – commented Barbara Nowacka Zbigniew Kaliszuk from the Proelio Group Foundation in a published on KAI article. Kaliszuk is, among others, the author of the petition "NO for sexual depravity in schools".
During the presentation of the fresh subject on Tuesday in the Sejm, it turned out that organisations with concerns about MEN plans were not invited to the gathering of the combined education and discipline committees and the children and youth committees.
The president of the Education and discipline Committee, Catherine Szumilas, was blocking the failure of these organisations to comply with the standards in time, while the opposition MPs pointed out that there was another reason for not voting: the alleged deficiency of area in the Chamber, which was not true. The opposition even indicated that any organisations initially received approval, but it was later withdrawn.
Deputy Minister of Education Katarzyna Lubnauer stated that these organisations see wellness education only issues concerning sexual education. She felt that raising to life in a household was an object that was “failed” and that young people present have learned about this sphere from pornographic sites, so it is necessary, in her opinion, to introduce an object that will decently discuss aspects of sexual life.
The charges are specific.
Meanwhile, pro-family organizations are putting forward concrete legal, pedagogical and social arguments against MEN's plans. They were well presented at a conference organised by Coalition for the Salvation of the Polish School togetherau Catholic Information Agency in Warsaw.
The basic demands of the Coalition for the Salvation of the Polish School are actually three. The thought is to leave education for general education in a household in which sexual education is embedded in the context of matrimony and family.
Therefore (second paragraph) it is essential not to introduce a fresh subject of wellness education into schools, including sexual education embedded in the context of health.
A 3rd postulate is respect for the constitutional rule of parental parenthood – by leaving voluntary classes in schools, which include the subject of education in the field of sexual life (sexual education).
These demands were recalled in an open letter to the opinioners of the wellness Education task of 19 November. The coalition presented them on behalf of nearly 100 social organizations.
Sex for pleasure, no – love
As Dr. Zbigniew Barciński, president of the NATAN Pedagogy Association, pointed out during the conference, so far the framework of teaching the subject of sexuality in the Polish school was family. In this place MEN proposes to replace household – health.
“This is the kind of overdrawal of this subject that brings a double message. First, that the most crucial value in the sphere of sexuality is health. The second message, not explicitly, that erstwhile it comes to human sexuality and sexual education, the household does not matter. The household is removed here, out of sight," said Dr. Barciński. According to the expert, it is simply a message depreciating the household and hitting it.
The MEN declaration – the expert further said – is that the framework [to discuss this subject] will now be health, but in the text of the draft regulation crucial wellness information has actually been moved to the "optional" section. – There is no crucial wellness information. There is, for example, no information about the effects of adopting maturing blockers, or another information that would service as preventive ones," argued Dr. Barciński.
– It indicates that wellness is just fiction, a smokescreen. In fact, erstwhile it comes to sexual education, wellness is not the main framework, context, value for MEN. What, then, is it? It is pleasure," said the educator.
In his opinion, in the MEN concept, "sexuality is to service pleasure, not – love, not – marriage, not – family". “This is the message that MEN wants to address to children and young people: sex is only for pleasance and so marriage, household and love – all of this is oppression, a blockade that should be rejected,” he added.
Marriage in the Margin
The second crucial area, which in the plans of the MEN raises concerns of the Coalition for Polish Salvation Schools are changing normative patterns, or a circumstantial educational perfect as part of sexual education.
In this context, Dr. Barciński compared the values proposed to spread to children and young people on (optional) subject substance of education for household life and (to become compulsory) subject of wellness education.
In the case of WEDZ, said the educator, these are clearly indicated relationships: marriage, a unchangeable household full of respect and common love, while in wellness education, the word matrimony – if it appears – appears only in the context of legal issues and is on the margins. At the heart of wellness education are to be informal, passing, without support in love as a lasting feeling.
"The LGBT message indicates that specified a pattern of sexual relations is simply a variety of relationships, even a fewer people, and that the household can be understood in specified a way that it will be created by, for example, 2 gays or 2 lesbians surviving together and raising children. This is an example from the flagship position of these environments – the Encyclopedia of Gender," Dr. Barciński said.
IN VIEW, the criterion for assessing sexual activity is love, a permanent union certified by the matrimony oath, while wellness education promotes the word "conscious consent". – If he is aware of the consent, then sex is acceptable if he is not there – he is bad. He pointed out – in the programming basis there are warnings that prostitution is simply a threat, there is simply a mention to the articles of the Criminal Code which talk about the age of consent, but if the concept of "conscious consent" is promoted, then the logical consequence is to accept all relationships where consent is.
Sexual destabilisation
Pedagog besides pointed out another challenged criteria, specified as acceptance of fertility, indicating that the kid is simply a value, while in wellness education the kid is treated as a threat. “There is an emphasis on the methods of contraception, which children and young people are to learn, is abortion,” he said. In the WEDZ there is an emphasis on controlling sexual impulses, working on yourself, self-suffering, in turn in wellness education there is no specified subject at all – Dr. Barciński said.
The expert besides compared sex issues: the importance of self-acceptance, becoming a man and a female is evident in the HEAD, whereas in wellness education this division does not appear, it promotes an incentive to discuss the concept of transgenderity or cis-genderness, which is crucial for the LGBT agenda. "This carries a message destabilizing gender," said the educator.
While assessing the paper proposed by MEN, Dr. Barciński recalled that wellness education is simply a compulsory subject. – MEN wants to force children and youth to take part in this kind of class and usage the state apparatus for it," he said.
In his opinion, this is simply a powerful blow to children and young people, which will lead to many tragedies. It will be depravity and demoralization of the young generation. It is an anti-family project, a "chained anti-family saw", and, contrary to the government's statements, an anti-health project, as it does not mention the side effects of utilizing contraception as well as contrary to the teaching of the Church.
"Therefore, this task must be stopped, he cannot enter Polish schools" - concluded Dr. Zbigniew Barciński.
The opposition in the West was besides weak

It is worth recalling that pro-family organizations, including the Polish Federation of Movements of defence of Life, besides wanted to postpone these committee meetings and extend the public consultation by 1 month. However, the Ministry of Education remained deaf to this demand.
