The Holy See and Beijing reached an agreement on the nomination for the bishop of Fuzhou diocese in Fujian Province. Joseph Lin Yuntuan became that.
Hierarch will enter office with the approval of both the Vatican and the Communist organization of China. According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, the nomination is another consequence of the dialog between the Holy See and Chinese offices. It is besides a “significant step” for the diocese itself.
The process of appointing bishops in China is not always so good. Shortly before the beginning, the conclaves of China introduced 2 fresh bishops, although the Vatican could not accept this – due to the fact that there was no pope at the time.
The Holy See signed a secret agreement with Beijing in 2018, which concerns the appointment of bishops. It has already been extended respective times, the last time – in 2024. The agreement is subject to harsh criticism from any cardinals, especially the retired bishop of Hong Kong, Joseph Zen.
The opponents of the agreement are besides Americans, hence any suspected that Pope Leon XIV could torpedo or simply dissolve them. But so far, there's no indication.
