OPEN LETTER
to the opinion holders of the draft Regulations on the MEN website[1] on the revision of the curriculum and the introduction of compulsory wellness education into schools
Ladies and gentlemen,
We call on you to take into account the arguments and voice of the omitted social side. Be expressive of the demands and will of thousands of parents who argue this harmful project. We request compliance with our constitutional rights, which violates the draft MEN Regulation!
We talk on behalf of nearly 100 social organizations, which signed a petition to the MEN on 21.08.201024, calling for:
‘1) leaving education for general subjects to live in a household where sexual education is embedded in the context of matrimony and family;
2) not introducing a fresh subject of wellness education into schools, including sexual education embedded in the context of health;
3) respect for the constitutional rule of parenting priority, by leaving voluntary these classes in schools, which include the subject of education in the field of sexual life (sexual education)".
The content of the petition was not taken into account at the phase of drafting the draft regulation, nor was the public organization proposed to participate in the task consultation.
Sexual education, which has so far been voluntary, in accordance with the rule of parental parenthood, respected by public authorities, is an crucial component of the fresh subject! This was reflected in the anticipation for parents to decide whether to send or not to send underage children to education classes in a household where sexual education was discussed. The current MEN proposal violates this rule of voluntaryity.
Parents have the right to rise their children according to their beliefs, including moral and religious, especially in a sphere as delicate as sexuality and sexuality. This law is natural, and is besides guaranteed in Articles 48(1) and 53(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, as well as in many binding Polish rules of global law, specified as the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, whose Article 14(3) guarantees “the right of parents to supply education and teaching of children according to their own religious, philosophical and educational beliefs”.
The proposed fresh subject contains many valuable content, however, according to the current programme basis of general education, they are present in, among others, nature, biology, chemistry, physical education, safety education and household education.
On the another hand, there is simply a strong opposition to fresh sexual education content, which we discuss in an extended analysis prepared by a squad of experts, in cooperation with the Coalition for the Salvation of the Polish School, which will receive MEN. The squad represents the environment of lawyers, doctors (including gynecology, pediatrics, paediatric psychiatry), educators, psychologists, teachers and school directors (authors: Prof. Dr. B. Chazan, Dr. A. Górecki, Dr. Z. Barciński, H. Dobrowolska, D. Jarczewska, R. Krupa, J. Dobrzyńska, E. Piesiewicz-Grzonkowska, B. Kopczyński, T. Król, A. Marianowicz-Szczygieł, A. Pawlik-Regulska, M. Puzio). The analysis is published on the Polish School's Coalition for the Salvation website at this link:
Analysis of the basics of wellness education
Depriving of sexuality from the context of household and fertility and providing information about many aspects of sexuality besides young students (e.g., in cl. 4-6 talk about autosexual behaviour – read masturbation – as compatible with the medical standard, and students aged 13-14 are expected to learn about methods of contraception and discuss preparation for sexual initiation) rise our serious concerns. So understood wellness education with a component in the form of sexual education can have many undesirable, even anti-health effects, specified as the primitism of sex life, the increase in sexual partners, the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases, the susceptibility to pedophile, the demographic crisis, as illustrated by examples of countries with a long-established model of permissive sexual education.
Therefore, we request that sexual education classes stay on the current voluntary model and we anticipate you to take into account our position in your opinion – in accordance with the constitutional rule of parental parental priority.
