Poland's large decline in the competitiveness ranking

In the latest planet Competition Ranking, developed by the Swiss Business School IMD, Poland recorded a decrease of up to eleven positions.

In a ranking of 69 countries we ranked 52nd – this is the worst consequence in at least 5 years. The ranking is based on an analysis of more than 330 indicators that combine statistical data with the opinions of managers from around the world.

Poland's results deteriorated in all key categories. In the area of economical results we have fallen from 19th to 25th position. In the efficiency of the government – including public finances, taxes, law and functioning of the institution – the decline was even more felt: from 44th to 58th place. In the category of business efficiency, which measures productivity, management and the labour marketplace situation, we noted a drastic drop from 46th to 64th. Even infrastructure – traditionally stronger side – did not defend itself from deterioration, moving from 38th to 41st place.

The ranking was headed by Switzerland, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong. The first 10 are closed by Denmark, the United arabian Emirates, Taiwan, Ireland, Sweden, Qatar and the Netherlands. The United States took 13th place, China took 16th and Germany took 19th, which means a promotion of 5 positions compared to the erstwhile year.

For Poland this means a disturbing signal. The decline in economical competitiveness is not only a symbolic failure – it is simply a real weakening of our position towards our neighbours. The Czech Republic took 25th place, Lithuania – 21st, and even Hungary, frequently in a akin economical situation, overtakes us and ranks 48th.

This year's consequence should be a informing for both decision-makers and entrepreneurs. The weakening of government efficiency and the decline in business competitiveness show that deep reforms are needed. Poland must rebuild investor confidence, increase productivity and improve conditions for business. Infrastructure modernisation, better education and efficient public institutions are key elements that can reverse the negative trend.

If Poland does not take decisive action, we are threatened by further slowing down in the ranking – and in real global economical competition.
