The Social Insurance Institution began to transfer the first money for widow's pension. This is simply a historical minute for hundreds of thousands of Polish seniors who have been waiting for this support for months. Interest in the fresh service exceeded all expectations – over 800,000 applications have already been received by ZUS, which has led to the overload of IT systems and extension of queues in branches. For many widowed people, mostly women, this is simply a chance to get out of poorness and regain financial stableness after losing a spouse.
The first money went into eligible accounts on July 1, 2025, and ZUS ensures that the payout strategy is already full operational. However, a immense number of requests made since the beginning of the year mean that many seniors had to wait for a decision and transfer over six months. Now it is crucial to meet the deadlines – only applications submitted by the end of July warrant compensation for the full month. Up to PLN 5636 per month. How does the widow’s pension mechanics work?

Moreover, it is already known that the benefit will increase. The government planned an automatic rise – from 1 January 2027, the second lower component of the benefit will increase from 15% to 25%. This means an additional fewer 100 zlotys a period without any fresh applications.
Watch the traps. Not everyone gets the maximum amount
However, the widow’s pension strategy contains crucial restrictions which may be disappointing to any applicants. The most crucial of these is the allowance limit. If the sum of the combined benefits (e.g. full pension and 15% household pension) exceeds 3 times the lowest pension, i.e. the said PLN 5636.73, the surplus will be deducted from the payment.
This means that people with comparatively advanced benefits may not benefit from the improvement at all. Seniors whose own pension or household pension exceeds the amount are assumed to be approximately PLN 5700 gross, will not be entitled to widow’s pension. The limit besides includes any another benefits, specified as nursing allowances or benefits from abroad. Importantly, the limit does not include the alleged 500 plus for non-self-employed persons and the support benefit.
Raw conditions and digital help. Who qualifies for the benefit?
In order to apply for a widow’s pension, a number of strict criteria should be met. First of all, the applicant must have already established by the Social safety Office the right to 2 benefits: own (retirement or pension) and household pension after the deceased spouse. Age is besides crucial – woman must be at least 60 years old and male 65 years old.
