From 22 January 2025, pseudomarriages of the same sex may be concluded in Thailand. Gay couples will enjoy a number of privileges and will be able to adopt children. Authorities are counting on increased gross generated by homosexual tourists.
Under the law adopted at the beginning of the year by Parliament and signed in the summertime by the Thai ruler, it will be possible to registry alleged same-sex marriages of persons aged 18 and older. They gain the right to inherit, taxation breaks and adopt children.
Although the Thai authorities introduced a number of regulations in 2015 to defend representatives of sexual minorities from discrimination, the actions taken by the homosexual lobby to recognise alleged single-sex marriages were stuck in the dead end until 2024.
A large supporter of the legalization of homosexual pseudomarriage was Prime Minister Sretthy Thavisin, who indicated that this would besides strengthen Thailand's reputation as a LGBTQ tourist-friendly country, thus generating additional gross for the state budget.
Thailand is presently the 3rd country in Asia to recognise same-sex marriages, after Taiwan (2019) and Nepal (2023). It ranks among about 40 countries in the planet that have adopted akin regulations.
The alleged draft law on matrimony equality is simply a method amendment to the Thai civilian and Commercial Code.
On November 18, the American CNBC station, citing a study ordered by Agoda's travel agency, indicated that Thai government on same-sex "may attract an additional 4 million tourists a year" (an increase of 10%). This would make about $2 billion in yearly gross from tourism over 2 years.
Not only same-sex couples and their wedding guests will come to Thailand, but besides "the wider LGBTQ community and not only". The study was prepared by the Access Partnership consulting company, providing countries with an additional 76 1000 full-time jobs in the tourism industry, which would increase GDP by 0.3%.
Thailand is expected to become the most popular destination “for Indian LGBTQIA+ couples and people willing to celebrate with them”.
According to the Agoda report, the Thai government plans to organize a WorldPride planet parade.
Legal designation of alleged single-sex marriages gives emergence to a number of negative consequences for the full society, to which the costs of granting privileges to same-sex couples are transferred. This will have a negative attitude not only for the demography of a given country, but besides for the improvement of children and young people, freedom of speech, religion, etc. It will make problems related to the emergence of illness and crime due to the widespread permissive and promiscuous behaviour which will make fresh social costs. Ultimately, further sexual minorities and social unrest can be expected to make far-reaching claims.
