In fresh days the president of the Office for individual Data Protection (UODO) has decided to impose crucial financial penalties on 2 crucial banks in Poland – Santander Bank Polska and Toyota Bank Polska. The reason for this harsh decision is the identified breaches in the protection of the individual data of the customers of these banks.

Data Protection Violations: Late Bank Reaction

In the case of Santander Bank Polska, the incidental related to the breach of data protection came to light thanks to media, not information from the bank itself. The case active bank papers found in a stolen and abandoned courier delivery. Among the client data that leaked were names, names, PESEL numbers, addresses, account numbers and access passwords. On the another hand, Toyota Bank Polska was punished for a delayed consequence to the breach, which he reported only a year and a half after the incident.

Entitlements for Non-Notification of the Distortion

Santander Bank Polska was punished with a financial punishment exceeding PLN 1.4 million, while Toyota Bank Polska received a punishment of PLN 78 thousand. A key component of the sanctions was the late notification of the infringement to the UODO, which was a flagrant violation of existing data protection rules.

How to respond to the Bank's Data Leak?

In the event of a leak of data from the bank, there are respective key steps that customers should take to minimise possible harm and increase their financial security:

1. Change passwords and PIN codes: The first action should be to change access passwords to online bank accounts and PIN codes to payment cards.

2. Account Monitoring: Regularly checking transaction past in a bank account to detect unauthorized operations.

3. Contact with Bank: Direct contact with the bank to get information on the degree of the leak and the bank's recommended protective measures.

4. Credit security: If necessary, usage credit blocking services to prevent fresh credit accounts from being opened to individuals.
