Francis amazed the faithful and appeared on Sunday in St Peter's Square in the Vatican. The Pope's presence was not planned and only took a short time.

On Sunday in St. Peter's Square, Holy Mass was celebrated as part of the Jubilee of sick Persons and wellness Service Workers. The homily was prepared for this occasion by Francis himself, but during the Holy Mass it was read by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization.

Because of Francis' health, the faithful could not anticipate the presence of the Pope during Sunday ceremonies in St. Peter's Square. A spokesperson for the Holy See informed that all public activity of the Pope remains suspended and it is unknown erstwhile Francis will return to his full strength and be able to meet the faithful or receive peculiar guests.

This time, however, Francis decided to surprise the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square. At the conclusion of the Holy Mass, he appeared for a short while and greeted the gathered at the site. "Good Sunday for everyone, thank you very much," said the Pope.

Earlier, during the homily read by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the faithful heard the words of the pope's reflections, which recalled the message of Benedict XVI. At the time, the Pope said that "the measurement of humanity is defined in relation to suffering", and that "a society which cannot accept suffering ... is simply a cruel and inhuman society."

In the Sunday homily prepared by Francis, the faithful besides heard the appeal to not reject those who are weak or suffering. “Let us not distance ourselves from our lives to those who are weak, as unfortunately does today, sometimes, any kind of mentality, let us not exclude suffering from our backgrounds. Let us alternatively make it an chance to grow together to cultivate hope through the love which God first spilled in our hearts, and which, regardless of everything, is what will stay forever," wrote Francis.
