dailyblitz.de 1 month ago

In April 2025, exports of goods from Poland decreased by 2.4% y/y, reaching EUR 28,072 million. At the same time imports increased by 3.6% y/y, reaching EUR 29 013 million, according to the latest data of the National Bank of Poland. The trade deficit was EUR 941 million, which represents an improvement compared to the March consequence (1,895 million).

Why is exports falling?

According to the NBP, the main reasons for the decline in exports are:

  • The worsening situation of the European automotive industry – little request for car parts.
  • Increasing competition in EU markets – Polish exporters lose to another suppliers.
  • Decrease in supply and capital goods sales – key to Polish exports.

The only category where growth was recorded were agricultural products, as a consequence of rising prices on global markets.

Import is increasing – what drives this trend?

Increase in imports (PLN 123.8 billion) was associated with:

  • Higher purchases of consumer goods, especially semi-permanent and unstable.
  • Increased imports of agricultural products.
  • The fall in oil prices (o) 11%), which did not balance growth in another sectors.

Is there any chance of improvement?

Experts indicate that recovery in the Polish economy may gradually translate into greater home demand, but rebuilding exports depends on the situation in Europe, especially in the automotive industry.

"In particular, a further simplification in abroad sales of automotive parts and durable consumer goods had a negative impact on export dynamics" – emphasizes NBP.

Summary

Although the trade deficit decreased compared to March, decrease in exports and increase in imports may rise concerns. It will be crucial if the European economy regains momentum and Polish producers adapt to increasing competition.
