In Minnesota, there was a violent attack on local Democratic organization politicians. The perpetrator, disguised as a police officer, fatally shot the Democratic leader in the state parliament, Melissa Hortman, and her husband. Senator John Hoffman and his wife, who are fighting for their lives in the hospital, were besides injured.
Attack on Democrats – 2 fatalities
The first shooting occurred around 2 a.m. in Champlin, a suburb of Minneapolis. Senator Hoffman and his wife have been shot multiple times. An hr later, the attacker attacked the Hortman home in Brooklyn Park, about 10 km away.
The officers who arrived found the perpetrator dressed in police uniform, moving a vehicle resembling a police car. After exchanging fire with police, the attacker fled on foot, leaving behind a vehicle with a alleged manifesto, in which another politicians were identified as possible targets.
Reactions by the authorities and president Trump
Minnesota politician Tim Walz confirmed it was "Act of targeted political violence".
"Peaceful discussion is the basis of our democracy. We do not settle our disputes with force or with weapons threats" said Walz, adding that the state lost a prominent leader.
President Donald Trump responded on social media:
"I was informed of the terrible Minnesota shooting, which seems to be an attack against local politicians. specified force will not be tolerated in the United States. God bless the people of Minnesota!”
The unsub's search continues.
Although the identity of the attacker has already been established, the authorities have not yet revealed his identity. Intensified investigative action is underway, and police call for caution and reporting any suspicious activity.
