Right-wing leaders in France and the delicate issue of Israel

In the May Odox barometer, it is worth pointing out 2 studies: the first shows who the French see as the leader of the right, the second shows the polarization of the relation towards Israel, whose war crimes cannot be overlooked.

First of all, Jordan Bardella leads with a large advantage, Bruno Retailleau moves up and Gérald Darmanin remains in the shadow of leading players. Against the background of the assessments, there is 1 clear point of tension: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which shows the distance between leaders' attitudes and their voters' reserve against hard action against Israel.

Jordan Bardella – leader without competition

Support: 74% among right-wing sympathizers
President of the National Unity (Rassemblement National), a 29-year-old, combines a clear anti-systemic message with media professionalism. He is seen as the heir to Marine Le Pen, but with a new, more disciplined strategy. His position among the right is indisputable, although his electorate shows only average support for Macron's policy towards Israel (59% behind sanctions – least among the parties).

Bruno Retailleau – a fresh point of gravity for Republicans

Support: 55% among right-wing sympathizers
Republican president (Les Républicains), a conservative from Wandea, focuses on returning to identity and household values. His poll consequence is simply a consequence of fast growth – in the year he gained as much as +19 points among the right, ahead of the old leaders. Concerning Israel – cautious. His voters are 65% for sanctions, but without enthusiasm for extremist steps.

Gérald Darmanin – outsider from inside the system

Support: 41% among right-wing sympathizers
Home Secretary, formerly active with Republicans, present the face of Macronism. It combines firmness towards Islamism with centre-right rhetoric, which gives it popularity both in the centre and in the right. His support is unchangeable but clearly lower than his competitors. On Israel – loyal to the line of the Elysée Palace.

Israel: a dispute between the Palace and the Right

Although Emmanuel Macron gains support through a tough attitude towards Netanjah policy and the announcement of the designation of Palestine (which supports 63% of the French total, 35 % against), right-wing electorates respond with clear distance. The top scepticism is seen among the sympathizers of National Unity (RN). Only 41% of them support the designation of the Palestinian state and 58% are against it. A akin situation exists in the Republican electorate (LR) – 48% are in favour here and 51% against. This means that most voters of these groups reject the authoritative designation of Palestine by France, which shows compliance with a more pro-Israeli, cautious line of right-wing leaders.

At the centre of the political scene, the Renaissance electorate (the Macron party) shows a higher level of acceptance – 69% is “for”, though 30% declare opposition. This support is clear but little unanimous than the left. On the another hand, left-wing electorates are almost unanimously in favour of the designation of Palestine. Among the sympathizers of Humble France (LFI) as much as 88% is “for”, in the Socialist organization (PS) – 85%, and among the Greens (Les Écologists) – 83%. In these groups, the opponents make up only a twelve percent.
