German Chancellor Friedrich Merz explained at a press conference from the return of migrants to Poland and another countries with which the German national Republic is neighbouring. As he claims, everything is done according to the rules. Merz met with Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden on Monday.

Merz added that Germany wants to keep the Schengen area, but it is only able to function if it is not utilized by criminals.

"Naturally, we want to keep the Schengen area, but the freedom of movement in it will only work in the long run if it is not abused by people encouraging illegal migration, and especially by migrant smugglers," said the Chancellor.

Referring to Polish media reports, Merz assured that Germany did not send asylum seekers to Poland, who are in German territory. "There is no and there will be (such cases – PAP)," he said. He pointed out that in Poland there is even talk of a "tourist" consisting in moving migrants across the border to Poland. “There are no specified cases”, he reiterated.

However, he admitted that there was a return of migrants from German borders with all neighbours. "We are talking to both Poland and Luxembourg to minimise the burden. These are people who are trying to cross the border illegally," he explained.

Merz said that his government and he were in close contact with the Polish side to "minimize the adverse effects of control". "We have a common problem that we want to solve together," he stressed.

He added that he spoke with Prime Minister Donald Tuski on the occasion of the EU and NATO summits in Brussels and The Hague. As he added, there was a long telephone conversation between the home ministers on Monday evening.

He pointed out that there were discussions about "common border controls" on both sides of the Polish-German border. "Between me and Tuski, but between Home Ministers is very close, friendly and friendly cooperation," the head of the German government assured.

Tusk reported on Tuesday that Poland has been restoring temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania since 7 July. "By then, the applicable services, including the Border defender in particular, were required to prepare this operation logistically," said Tusk.

Merz besides said that Germany should proceed to share an anti-nuclear shield with the United States in the coming years and even decades, but are open to discussions about a possible European medium- and long-term protection.

"This is simply a task that comes only in a very, very long term, due to the fact that there are many issues that require answers and that are not limited to the deadline in which we request to increase Europe's defence capacity within the existing structures," said the Chancellor.

The head of the opposition of the German organization Greenie Franziska Brantner told the Phoenix tv station that the spiral of introducing border controls is “a tragic phenomenon”. "We, Europeans, have a chance to last only if we work together alternatively of throwing sticks at each other," she noted. Brantner called on Merza to conclude a "fair agreement" with German neighbours on border controls. In her view, the current government's migration policy in Berlin is contrary to European law.

The German Police Professional Union (GdP) expressed concern about the situation on the Polish-German border. GdP president Andreas Rosskopf warned against "ping pong" – a situation in which German services will send migrants from the border and Polish borderers will refuse to accept them or send them back. "This should be prevented," said the unionist of DPA.
