Historical calendar: anniversary of the election of Jan Sobieski as King of Poland. His triumph was not easy, for not everyone saw this magnate on the throne.

Today, in our calendar, we will look at the circumstances associated with his taking up power in the Republic of Poland.

After his election as King Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki, Jan Sobieski went to the opposition, creating a faction of malcontents. Democratic partisan struggles caused the country to be completely unprepared to defend at the time of the Turkish invasion in 1672. Sobieski's thin and demoralized forces were only able to defy insignificant Tatar raids.

The shameful treaty in Buchacz for a minute united the fighting factions. As a result, taxes were passed on the army, which, under Sobieski's command, defeated the Turks under Chocimie on 11 November 1673. The King of Cherry died the day before.

The fame Sobieski gained thanks to his triumph at Chocim, caused that during the election of 1674 the nobles chose him as King of Poland. The election conflict was fought by Tsar Aleksy Romanov, Prince Charles V of Lorraine and Prince Jerzy Oldenburg of Denmark. The appropriate election began on Saturday 19 May 1674.

On the following day, as always on Sundays, the procedures were interrupted, the Masses were attended, but negotiations were besides held at the back of the room, during which resisting bribes were paid (e.g. the Sobieski case was supported by the French). On Monday, May 21, after counting the votes, they were called Vivat Joannes Rex.

The fresh ruler waited for the coronation to take place only in 1676, as matters of war put over little crucial from his point of view, formal issues. He sought to reflect the lost Buchatian land and almost succeeded, but the betrayal of the Lithuanian captain Michael Pac, which withdrew Lithuanian troops at the crucial minute of the campaign, led to an extension of the unfavourable status quo At the ends.

Russia entered the war with Turkey in 1674. This made the offensive in Ukraine easier for Poles, but yet it failed, mainly due to the notorious actions of Pac, who doubled and tropped so that no triumph would happen. Nevertheless, in 1676, Sobieski defeated the Sultan's troops in the conflict of Żurawne and concluded a truce by which Poland recovered about 1/3 of the territory lost in 1672.
