Since gaining independency in 1991 until the outbreak of the conflict with Russia, about 3 million Ukrainians have lost their lives in search of a better life. The war again accelerated the population's drain. But that's only part of the problem. In 1991, Ukraine had 52 million inhabitants. Currently, this figure has fallen below 38 million.
According to authoritative data, in 1991-2015 the population of Ukraine decreased by 10 million, to about 42 million people. According to the UN estimates, in 2024 it was only 37.9 million. any demographers believe that the actual number of people surviving in Ukraine controlled areas may be even lower – even little than 30 million.
The main challenge is the low average life expectancy, especially among men. This is due to unhealthy lifestyles, mediocre working conditions, smoking, alcohol consumption and advanced mortality in road accidents.
The Politico article noted that polls conducted among alleged war refugees suggested that most of them, even over 80%, intend to return to their homeland after the end of the war. According to Lebanon, however, the real return rate will be up to 50%.
According to the erstwhile head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kułęby, most of the migrants will no longer return. – I always told the president that our only salvation was immigration from another countries, but he never agreed with me. – he said.
Total post-war demographic failure Ukraine is hard to estimation today, but according to Lebanon, by 2030 the population of Ukraine could be just over 30 million - and this, anyway, provided that the war ends comparatively rapidly and to the degree favorable to Ukraine. However, there are indications that the east provinces will leave the country, which means a further decline in the population, possibly even little than 25 million people.
