On May 7, 1977, a tragic death of Stanisław Pyjas, a student of the Jagiellonian University, a co-worker's Defence Committee, died in Krakow. The authoritative message stated that the origin of his death was a head injury caused by a fall from the stairs. However, the circumstances indicate that he has become a victim of the activities of the safety Service. To this day, the substance has not been full resolved.
In the morning of May 7, 1977, the body of Stanisław Pyjas, a student of Polish philology and doctrine at the Jagiellonian University, was found in the gate of the building on Szewskia 7 Street in Krakow, who was a co-worker of the Committee of defence of Workers.
Initially, the investigation was conducted by a section of the killings of the Civic Militia in Krakow, but was rapidly taken over by the safety Service.
The next day, after the prosecution's incident, she presented in the local press the opinion that Stanisław Pyjas, under the influence of alcohol, fell down the stairs and died as a consequence of injuries to his head, choking on his own blood.
From the very beginning, the authoritative version of the circumstances of the death of Stanisław Pyjas for his friends and friends was unbelievable. They knew that the defender was curious in him and followed him. On April 21, Pyjas, along with respective college colleagues, notified the prosecutor of the anonymous threats they received. He was beaten up just before he died.
His colleague Stanisław Pietraszko, a associate of the SZSP (Socialist Union of Polish Students), could aid explain the causes of the death of a Kraków student. The last day he saw Stanisław Pyjas. According to his evidence at the D.A.'s office, there was much indication that Pyjas was being convoyed by a unusual man. Unfortunately, Stanisław Pietraszko did not see the conclusion of the investigation, on 1 July 1977 his body was found in the Solinski Basin. The authoritative origin of death, many doubts, was drowning.
The case of the death of Stanisław Pyjas has not yet been resolved. The investigation was discontinued in 1977. According to the authoritative version confirmed by the Department of Judicial medicine in Krakow, Pyjas's death was to be caused by injuries caused by falling down stairs.
In June 1991, an investigation resumed and it was established that the origin of death was fatal beating. Minister of Interior Andrzej Milczanowski, however, did not agree to disclose data about secret co-workers of SB and in October 1992 the investigation was terminated due to the inability to detect the perpetrators. The investigations carried out in the following years did not bring a breakthrough in the case and were decommissioned primarily for formal and legal reasons.
In 2001, the court in Krakow sentenced 2 years in prison to 2 erstwhile MO and SB officers, accused of obstructing the investigation into Pyjas's death in 1977, was to hide information about the engagement of SB in the case from the prosecution.
The death of Stanisław Pyjas not only touched the academic community of Krakow. The mourning celebrations held on May 15 became a large manifestation. In the evening, after a mass in the Dominican church, a thousands of march, carrying silently black flags and burning candles, was set in the direction of Wawel.
At Wawel, the declaration of the establishment of the Student Solidarity Committee (SKS) was read. It states, among others, "In consequence to the shocking fact of the killing, a spontaneous initiative of boycotting juvenal events was born among Kraków students.
The grief of students and residents of Krakow was repeatedly violated by SB and SZSP officers. Among another things, many of our colleagues in mourning were detained and arrested, and even desecration of mourning sites was repeatedly committed. Thus, the SZSP yet lost its moral right to represent the student community. Therefore, on 15 May this year, we set up the Student Solidarity Committee to initiate work on the creation of an authentic and independent student organisation."
Ten students signed under the declaration: Andrzej Balcerek, Joanna Barczyk, Liliana Batko, Wiesław Bek, Małgorzata Gątkiewicz, Elżbieta Majewska, Lesław Maleszka (secret associate of SB “Ketman”, close friend of Pyjas), Józef Ruszar, Bogusław Sonik and Bronisław Wildstein.
The initiative of the Kraków SKS was besides taken by students from another cities: Warsaw, Wrocław, Gdansk and Poznań. In this way, apart from authoritative structures, independent academic movement arose. It was related to the illegal writings “Index”, “Signal” and “Bratniak”.
After August 1980, any student activists switched to Solidarity and after the martial law was declared to the underground. The SKS traditions were an inspiration for the Independent Student Association, established after 1980.
Recalling Stanislaw Pyjas, Bronisław Wildstein, his friend and man who had been struggling for years to explain the circumstances of his death, he wrote: “Policy was of small interest to him as to all of us, his environment. We didn't realize her very well, she was simply a repressive system. due to the fact that it was in the communist system. And in that sense, she was omnipresent. Whatever we would effort to do: literature, philosophy, art or science, we would encounter limitations, the network of the system, which was looping all initiative, would restrict our freedom in all spheres.” In opposing this reality, Pyjas chose an attitude that was “an appearance against evil with all the cognition of the risks active and the prices that could be paid for it. He paid the highest price.”
Stanislaw Pyjas' case became the subject of a documentary movie "Death of a Student", made in late 1977 and 1978 by Finnish manager Jarmo Jaaselainen. Krzysztof Krauze presented the communicative of the investigation in the movie Street Games.
23 September 2006 Polish president Lech Kaczyński posthumously marked Stanisław Pyjas with the Commander's Cross of the Revival of Poland. (PAP)
