HONG KONG- Singapore Airlines (SQ), Scoot (TR), and Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) cancelled and delayed multiple flights to and from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and other affected cities as Typhoon Wipha approached the region.

Changi Airport (SIN) and Macau International Airport (MFM) were among the affected hubs, with changes made to safeguard passengers amid hazardous weather.

Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) halted all Hong Kong (HKG) operations from 5 am to 6 pm, with Singapore Airlines (SQ) and Scoot (TR) also suspending and rescheduling flights between Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), Shenzhen (SZX), and Macau (MFM) due to safety protocols and regional authorities’ warnings.

As Typhoon Wipha reached Southeast China, airlines issued swift responses to minimize passenger risk:

  • Singapore Airlines (SQ) cancelled two outbound flights from Changi Airport (SIN) to Hong Kong (HKG) on July 20: SQ874 and SQ882.
  • Three inbound flights from Hong Kong (HKG) to Singapore (SIN) were cancelled: SQ899, SQ875, and SQ883.
  • Two services, SQ892 (SIN to HKG) and SQ893 (HKG to SIN), were rescheduled to depart two hours later than originally planned.
  • Singapore Airlines (SQ) also cancelled two flights connecting Singapore (SIN) to Shenzhen (SZX): SQ856 and SQ857.
  • Scoot (TR) suspended services between Singapore (SIN) and Macau (MFM): TR904 and TR905.
  • Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) suspended all flights arriving at and departing from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) from 5 am to 6 pm on July 19.

Affected airlines have committed to assisting customers with rebooking options or full refunds upon request, Bloomberg reported.

The Hong Kong Observatory announced plans to issue Typhoon Signal 8, indicating a high probability of destructive winds, heavy showers, and thunderstorms throughout the Pearl River Delta, including Hong Kong and neighboring areas.

The Education Bureau preemptively cancelled all special classes and school events for July 20.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong advised travelers of significant flight disruptions, cautioning that a full return to regular schedules could take up to two days following the storm’s passage.
