Daily buying in May 2025 again hit Poles in the pocket. According to the latest study by UCE investigation and the University of WSB Merito, retail prices have increased by an average of 5.7% a year. This is another period in which consumers must anticipate higher prices for basic products.

What's the most expensive?

The analysis of 17 product categories shows that only 1 of them recorded a decrease in prices. The biggest increases hit:

  1. Drugs (coffee, tea, alcohol) – growth by 12.8% y/y
  2. Dairy – more costly about 9.2%
  3. Fat products (butter, margarine, oil) – increase by 8.9%
  4. Sweets and desserts – growth by 7.7%

The only category that went down was bulk articles (sugar, flour, etc.), where a decrease in 2.3%.

Why are prices inactive rising?

Experts point to respective key factors affecting price increases:

  • High production and distribution costs – energy, transport and wages are inactive charged to final prices.
  • Drought natural materials on planet markets.
  • Pay pressure in the commercial and manufacturing sectors.

"In April before Christmas, shops offered more promotions to attract customers. In May prices returned to average levels, which led to an increase in indicators" – explains Joanna Myślowska-Wieprow from the University of WSB Merito.

Is there any further price?

Given the continuing advanced business costs and fluctuations in natural material prices, further increases cannot be excluded. Consumers should be prepared for further increases in prices, especially in terms of dairy or stimulants.
