Latvian services detained on 7 September in Jēkabpils territory of a Polish citizen suspected of transporting six migrants who illegally crossed the border with Belarus. 3 people were found utilizing a service dog and a drone. The case shows that the protection of the east flank requires the prosecution of drivers who besides service the smuggling route.
Mercedes detained in the municipality of Ābeļi
The intervention took place on Monday, 7 September in the municipality of Ābeļi, in Jēkabpils territory in the southeast of Latvia. The police stopped the Mercedes led by a Polish citizen. As the car stopped, possibly six passengers fled into the forest.
Latvian services began searching, utilizing a guide with a service dog and a drone. At this stage, the man is simply a suspect, and his guilt can be decided by the court. Nationality does not prejudge responsibility. They're exaggerating the evidence.
Wolfman responds to force from Belarus
The detention occurred during Operation Vilkatis, or Wolf. Latvia launched it on 11 August as a coordinated consequence to the instrumentalisation of illegal migration by the Belarusian regime. Border Guards, police, armed forces and government crisis management centre were involved.
Latvian Government extended the operation until October. According to the data published on September 2, 4 people active in the transport of people were detained and over 600 people were prevented from crossing the border illegally. The decision was justified by the migration situation and harm to border infrastructure after the storms of August 22 and 23.

Latvian plans to reduce connections with Russia and Belarus show that Riga treats the safety of the east border more broadly than a series of individual interventions.
The nationality of a suspected driver shall not be utilized for collective assessments. However, it should encourage Polish services to check whether contacts or principals operating in Poland are behind the detention. The border is effective erstwhile the state breaks down the full smuggling mechanism.
