Imagine a situation where a wealthy upstairs neighbour regularly floods your apartment. You get a fungus on the wall and you get sick, not to mention another damage. You can't afford to move. You're going for financial compensation, but the best you can do is buy a mop. You're asking for more. No success.
It's been years. Life costs are rising. The price of the mop – too. You hear the neighbour doesn't have any money, and then you see him parked a fresh car under his cage. Later, the work for flooding burdenes her wife, an improperly serviced washing device and an elusive, incapable to repair a plumber or block builders—for a badly run sewer.
In addition to everything, your frustration gets a claim patch. Another time you get a large candy basket from your neighbour – of course he gives it to you in front of the remainder of the inhabitants. And he puts your photograph on Instagram together, with hashtag #worth helping. By the way, you find out he bought a mop with a vicinity drop.
Now imagine that the neighbour from above is the global North, the global South is you. Flooding takes on the magnitude of floods or another disasters you cannot escape, due to the fact that racist decision-makers block entry into Europe or America. They promise to pay you, but the money comes besides late, not at all, or simply not enough. What can you do? Not much, though there are instruments to take global action, even with solidarity.
One of them was expected to be UN Climate Change Convention. She did, due to the fact that the arrangements are inactive far from enough.
From 11 to 22 November 2024, the parties to the convention met for the 29th time in Baku and discussed what to do with the cooking planet. This was done with the almost evidence participation of fossil fuel lobbyists and without the participation of crucial Western decision-makers: Joe Biden, Ursuli Von der Leyen, Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron or Olaf Scholz.
Giving Azerbaijan the function of organizer was not without controversy. Following the United arabian Emirates, the climate summit's host almost 100% economy is based on coal, oil and gas, which president Ilham Aliyev called "a gift from God".
He did not neglect to call the West hypocrites and colonizers who on the 1 hand want Green DealAnd on the another hand, they buy Azerbaijani gas and poison the planet. It's hard to disagree with the latter, though I wouldn't exaggerate with any fresh order. The decisions taken at the climate summit stay chaotic, known and beneficial only for the richest position quo.
The main subject of this year's negotiations was money. As part of the global solidarity of the state that suffers most from climate change, although not contributing to it, they demanded a billion dollars fund. However, they left Baku with a forced – in a small democratic, hasty and not rather transparent procedure – mark of $300 billion a year, paid by 2035.
This is simply a much lower amount than the first one, which would not cover all expenditure generated by the effects of global warming. 1 would like to compose that it is better than nothing, but from an island country perspective, which can be immediately underwater, or erstwhile inflation is taken into account, it is hard to keep even a minimum of optimism. Imagine that any countries (the wealthier ones) were unsuccessful, pointing to an increase in the amount of support compared to 2009, erstwhile it was said to be $100 billion. That's good. The present amount is not even an inflation alignment, but a rich North like your bosses stubbornly calls it a raise.
The representatives of islands and confederate states are talking alternatively about "the global financial pyramid, which now will be utilized by private capital vultures and public relations people". Quoted by Common Dreams by Nikki Reisch of the Center for global Environmental Law, “COP29 was a dumpster. but it's not garbage burning – it's our planet. And developed countries hold both matches and fire hoses."
Understandable bitterness besides gives emergence to the "great intention" of adding to (no)agreement of the call to ambitious. This task with an asterisk, which means mobilising resources to meet climate targets of $1.3 by 2035, is not in any way – as indicated by specialists of the Polish Climate Coalition – requiring:
‘[...] Even if this higher, non-binding financial nonsubjective were adopted, it could inactive stay inadequate due to the fact that the COP29 decisions deficiency details of the accomplishment of the objective. There are no guarantees of certainty and stableness of funding. It is not known precisely where these funds are to flow and in what form they are to be transferred, whether they will, for example, deepen the debt of developing countries. According to CAN Europe, “from a legal point of view, the private sector and multilateral improvement banks cannot be held liable for agreements concluded under the UNFCCC or the Paris Agreement. This means that developing countries and civilian society have the minimum capacity to hold countries accountable for the nonsubjective of private investment set out in the proposal».
There is besides an allegation that the Guardian, which was to include the final findings of the parties, has edited Azerbaijan, who, like many another petrochemicals, wants to drag countries which are not prosperous and make fresh consumers of fossil fuels. In this arrangement, it is hard to trust anyone and surely not to underestimate the intentions of the mediate East, but the declarative interest in fresh green energy.
Of course, the improvement of the second is accelerating rather quickly, as indicated by the data of the global Energy Agency (IEA), indicating that green fossil fuels have been surpassed twice in terms of development. At the same time, dark clouds appear to be gathering on climate issues, not only due to the fact that Donald Trump is back in the seat of the president of the United States, but besides due to the increasing anti-immigrant moods and war fears that let a green transformation to be marginalized.
