On the night of 11 to 12 August an different incidental occurred at the railway border crossing in Dorohusk. A freight train arriving from Ukraine to Poland unexpectedly stopped at a railway crossing, alternatively of following the procedure to approach the crossing area. Border defender officers immediately reacted and after entering the locomotive they smelled a strong odor of alcohol from the crew.
The driver turned out to be a 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen and his 31-year-old assistant – besides Ukrainian. A breathalyse test revealed that they were both intoxicated. The engineer had nearly 2 promes of alcohol in his blood, his assistant – over 2. In specified a condition they ran a locomotive with freight wagons across the state border.
The train was immediately immobilized and secured. Border defender informed the applicable services – Chełm police and Railway Guard. The inebriated crew was detained and transported to detention facilities and then transferred to the Dorohusk police.
Both men will hear allegations under Article 178a(1) of the Criminal Code – driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, after the trial, the commandant of the SG station issued decisions ordering foreigners to leave Poland and to ban them from entering our country and the Schengen area for another 5 years. These decisions shall have the rigor of immediate feasibility.
The event shows that even on seemingly regular sections of the border 1 cannot afford to be careless – especially erstwhile people's safety and infrastructure are at stake.
