Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán powerfully criticized European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen for the terms of the fresh trade agreement concluded with Donald Trump.
In his opinion, the gathering of the leaders in Scotland ended not in negotiations but in the surrender of the Union.
"It's apparent it wasn't an agreement," said Orbán in the program Warrior’s Hour, broadcast live in Hungary. “Trump did not make a deal with Ursula von der Leyen — Trump ate von der Leyen for breakfast. That's what happened.”
Under the announced agreement, the United States will introduce 15% duties on cars and another goods from the European Union. In addition, Brussels undertook to acquisition US energy worth $750 billion and US investment of $600 billion — clearly exceeding erstwhile commitments. However, the details of the structure of these expenditures were not disclosed.
Orbán spared no words of criticism against von der Leyen, accusing her of deficiency of strength and effectiveness in negotiations with the erstwhile US President:
"Von der Leyen is simply a featherweight player at Trump" said the Prime Minister of Hungary.
"The Union's negotiating position was pathetically weak."
Orbán, who has been openly criticising the European Commission for years, added that the agreement between the United States and Britain is, in his view, much more favourable:
"The US agreement with Britain is much better than what the Union has negotiated. It is barely a success at all.”
Orbán's message fits into his constant narrative, undermining the effectiveness of the Brussels elite and promoting stronger bilateral relations with the powers, especially with the US under Trump.
