In 2027, the installation of Mercedes-Benz engines for PGZ defence vehicles is expected to start in Kalisz, at least a 1000 per year. The letter of intent was signed on 9 September during MSPO in Kielce. Poland can gain a service centre and a greater share of national work, but the real transfer of competences will decide on success.

PGZ agreement with Daimler Truck Defence

The Polish Armed Forces Group and Daimler Truck Defence signed an first agreement on the sale and local assembly of Mercedes-Benz trucks during the global Defence manufacture Salon in Kielce. The paper opens the way for the construction of assembly capacity by PGZ, but in itself it is not yet an executive agreement or a warrant of achieving the scale announced.

According to Daimler Truck's September 9, 2026 announcement The line in Kalisz is to start working in 2027. In the long term, the plant is expected to mount a four-digit number of diesel engines per year. This means at least a 1000 units, but the partners have not given an exact production mark or investment value. Nor have they announced the number of fresh jobs.

It's an crucial distinction. Poland does not request conference promises, but the ability to count: machines, trained workers, quality tests, available parts and timely service. The letter of intent is the beginning of the road. The consequence will be known only erstwhile the ready-made engines are regularly leaving the hall in Kalisz.

From simple installation to more than 700 parts

Cooperation is to be developed in stages. Initially, almost complete engines can be sent to Poland, where selected components will be installed on site. The mark option involves the supply of CKD sets, i.e. engines divided into over 700 parts and folded in Poland according to certain quality standards. The deeper the scope of the work, the greater the national value added and the more cognition remains in the Polish industry.

Daimler Truck is to supply method advice, training and support for line design, quality control, investigating techniques and varnishing processes. The partners besides plan to make a competence centre in Poland liable for maintenance, repair, repair and modernization of engines. This component can be more strategical than the assembly itself. The army needs equipment that can be kept on-site, without waiting many months for abroad service.

The task is part of a wider series of PGZ agreements with abroad partners. The group late signed letter of intent on the possible production of X-BAT aircraft in Poland. In each case, the criterion should be identical: how much technology, work and production work will actually go to Poland.

Engines for average to dense vehicles

The first phase of cooperation will include Mercedes-Benz engines from medium-sized and heavy-duty drive craft families. Their capacity is between 7 and 15 litres and their power is 240 to 460 kW, or from 326 to 625 hp. Daimler Truck uses these structures, among others, in Unimog and Zetros vehicles. The engines are to be sent to defence vehicles of the PGZ Group companies intended for the Armed Forces of Poland.

The Kaliski task must be assessed together with the needs of Polish manufacturers of military trucks. Jelcz plans to sale nearly a 1000 vehicles in 2026and the expanding orders of the army increase request for unchangeable supply of drives and parts. Local assembly can shorten the supply chain and facilitate fleet service if it is linked to the real competences of Polish plants.

Poland is to be a producer, not a final assembly

Cooperation with a large abroad company can accelerate the improvement that would take years to build itself. However, access to proven technology must not be confused with industrial sovereignty. If key components, documentation and decisions stay only abroad, Poland will gain more efficient logistics, but will proceed to depend on the will and capacity of others.

Therefore, the State and the PGZ should keep strict eye on subsequent agreements. We request measurable commitments regarding participation of Polish suppliers, staff training, service rights, spare parts and modernisation capabilities. Cooperation PGZ with Turkish company MKE in anti-aircraft defense shows that the question of technology transfer returns throughout the arms sector.

There's a circumstantial stake. It is about the safety of Polish soldiers, taxpayers' money and resilience of supplies during the crisis. Kalisz can become an crucial hub for military propulsion. However, it must go from screwing respective elements to full assembly, testing, renovation and modernization. Only then will the abroad licence begin building Polish industrial power, alternatively of perpetuating the function of a subcontractor.
