During a working visit to Wołkowysk, Aleksander Lukashenko was informed that there was a decline in beef and pork production in the region. At the same time, officials claimed that the livestock incidence rate had “slightly fallen”, while authoritative statistic say mortality would increase. The leader was upset and harsh reaction, even talking about cutting off heads.
Lukashenko announced that the heads of officials would be cut off. — If your cattle die in Mohylev, give them to him (here he pointed out a supposedly solid host who accompanied him on his journey – ed.) Well, don't give, sell. Oh, God, don't let me gotta blame you for dying out of the piston for the second time, while there's area for fattening. Then I'll rip your heads off! You'll be liable for the cattle. We gotta take them to a good farm, let them fatten. There will surely be no extinction— Alexander Lukashenko shouted to Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shulejka.
Let us remind: on 29 May, Aleksander Lukashenko, together with the heads of the Council of Ministers, discussed "historical maximum" of livestock deaths. Due to the problem he punished respective officials and demandedto have the president of the State Control Committee and the lawyer General study on how many animals have already been imprisoned.
After gathering Lukashenko on 29 May, Minister of Agriculture and Food Yuri Gorlov transmitted State media journalists statistic on cattle mortality. According to the official, only 147.9 1000 pieces were lost in 2024 and 52,000 in the first 4 months of 2025. It is simply a tragedy due to the fact that fallen animals are not fit for human food.
In the State Audit Committee document, the agency cites the same numbers, but more specifically. Inspectors noted that in 2024 the number of dead cows, bulls and calves increased by 19% throughout the country, comparative to the erstwhile year. The worst situation was in the Mogilev circuit (an increase of 35%), Minsk (23%) and Homel (22%). In the first 4 months of 2025, the situation deteriorated importantly in the Vitebsk Oblast (an increase of 35% compared to the corresponding period of 2024), as well as in the Grodno and Homelsk Oblasts (10%).
Why is cattle dying massively in Belarus? Everything indicates that it is not an epidemic, but bad management and low care for animal welfare, which is typical of the communist economy of central planning. The same was actual in the times of the Polish People's Republic in the alleged State Farms (PGR).
OUR COMMENTS: all socialism falls through the economical crisis. It is simply a strategy which has nothing to do with rational management and natural predispositions of man. If something is state, it is nobody's, and so there is no point in caring about it. In turn, with low earnings and widespread shortages, it pays to bargain from specified businesses. No punishment can defend against this phenomenon. I'm amazed the old schoolboy Lukashenko doesn't know about this.
