Historical calendar: an anniversary of the decision taken by the Polish Olympic Committee to boycott the Los Angeles Olympics. Moscow forced this decision.
Today in our calendar we will look at the circumstances of this event.
In 1980, the russian Union organized the Olympic Games in Moscow. The United States then decided to boycott them as part of a protest against the russian invasion of Afghanistan. erstwhile the games were to be held by Americans 4 years later, The Kremlin decided to take a hard rematch.
The conflict between the empires worsened respective months before the competition, and 1 of the reasons was the russian fighter shot down a South Korean aircraft with 269 people on board. This sparked protests in the world, among which came the request to expel the ZSRS from Olympic rivalry. As part of the sanctions for this crime, in early 1984 the US did not issue a visa to the Russian athletic attaché. In the aftermath of Moscow, she utilized this pretext for propaganda action justifying the resignation of participation in the full games.
The case was handled in a typical communist propaganda way. On May 7, 1984, TASS released a message that was a smokescreen of the actual boycott motifs. Namely, it was informed that due to the deficiency of written guarantees to guarantee the safety of athletes from the USSR and another socialist countries by the organizers of the games. The Kremlin is forced to cancel the start of its representation.
A day later, the National Olympic Committee of the USSR announced that the situation in the US did not let russian athletes to participate in the games, and Los Angeles was a habitat of crime and fornication (which was in fact rather true). Simultaneously “Komsomolskaya Truth” and another propaganda women avoided saying that it was simply a boycott and a rematch for the Moscow Olympics.
The Kremlin's decision rapidly became an order for the satellite states. “In the atmosphere of threats you cannot take off” – informed on 9 May the title of the communication of the Polish Press Agency. As it turned out, it was an introduction to joining the PKOl to boycott, which was announced comparatively late, as it was only on May 17. On that day, the board officially decided not to study athletes to the competition.
The PKOl board murkyly explained that the organisation of the Olympics was entrusted to a group of private individuals, which "a number of negative consequences". At the same time, it was regrettable that it was a blow to Polish athletes, but of course the United States is to blame, which supposedly cannot supply the representatives of the east safety Block.
By May 17, the Olympic Committees of Bulgaria, the GDR, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam, Mongolia, Hungary and Cuba announced their resignation from the Games. Interestingly, Romania broke out of the monolith under the leadership of Nicolae Ceaușescu, which proved to be a revelation of the games themselves, taking second place in the medal classification. The Romanians won 53 seats on the podium (20 gold medals, 16 silver and 17 bronze). After that, it began to speculate that the judges deliberately falsified the results and rewarded Bucharest, hoping to further loosen Romania's dependence on Kremlin.
