Italian Prime Minister considers Trump's threats to be a negotiating tactic, says Politico

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes that the threats of US president Donald Trump's introduction of tariffs are a negotiating maneuver and sees a chance to enter into a deal with him, says Politico, citing 2 Italian officials who know the position of the Italian government.

"In contrast to another European leaders, it believes that Trump can inactive be negotiated and that his trade threats are nothing more than impertinent negotiating tactics," says the publication.

According to Politico's source, during a gathering with Trump in Washington, D.C. On April 17, Meloni wants to force concessions from the American president and besides show that it is possible to scope an agreement with Washington. At the same time, the origin recognises that Meloni's authority in the EU will be undermined if its efforts prove unsuccessful.

On 9 April, higher rates were introduced for 57 countries, calculated on the basis of the US trade deficit with a peculiar country, in order to accomplish a balance alternatively of deficit. However, on April 9, Trump announced that more than 75 countries had not taken retaliatory action and demanded negotiations, so basic import duties of 10% would be in force for 90 days for all countries but China.
