IndiGo Tirupati to Hyderabad Flight U-Turn

Flight 6E6591 was the final scheduled service from Tirupati to Hyderabad for the day, leading to inconvenience for passengers.

IndiGo’s on-ground team stated that passengers were requested to vacate the airport premises after the unscheduled return.

The airline has since arranged an alternative flight scheduled to depart at 8:20 AM the following day, ensuring onward travel for those affected.

The aircraft involved, an Airbus A321neo with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 8989, is 5.6 years old and was delivered to IndiGo in December 2019.

Built at Airbus’ Hamburg (XFW) facility, the aircraft initially bore the test registration D-AYAL before entering IndiGo’s fleet. VT-IUF is powered by two Pratt & Whitney (PW) engines and is configured in an all-economy layout with 222 seats.

The specific technical reason for the return has not yet been disclosed. However, IndiGo has confirmed that a comprehensive inspection is ongoing to ensure airworthiness before the aircraft resumes service.

Similar Incident

The pilot of IndiGo Airlines (6E) flight 6E6271, en route from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to Goa’s Manohar International Airport (GOX), declared a “PAN-PAN” alert mid-flight due to an engine issue.

The Airbus A320neo, carrying 191 people, was safely diverted to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM).

The incident occurred on July 16, 2025, when the flight was approximately 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar (BBI). The aircraft landed in Mumbai at 9:53 PM, with emergency services on standby. All passengers and crew were reported safe.

Emergency Alert and Safe Landing in Mumbai

The “PAN-PAN” call, an international signal indicating a non-life-threatening but urgent situation, was declared by the pilot after detecting a malfunction in engine number 1. The decision to divert was made as a precaution, following established safety protocols.

IndiGo Airlines clarified that the diversion resulted from a technical snag detected mid-air. An official statement from the airline emphasized adherence to standard operating procedures, ensuring that passenger and crew safety remained the top priority.

Emergency response teams, including ambulances and fire tenders, were positioned in advance at Mumbai Airport, shadowing the aircraft until it reached the designated bay.

The flight crew requested diversion clearance at 9:32 PM, and the aircraft landed safely at 9:53 PM—two minutes ahead of its scheduled arrival.

IndiGo confirmed that comprehensive technical checks and maintenance would be conducted on the aircraft before it returns to service. Meanwhile, arrangements for an alternative aircraft were made to transport passengers to their intended destination.

Other Technical Issues

This incident adds to a series of recent technical issues faced by Indian airlines. Earlier, a SpiceJet (SG) flight from Pune (PNQ) to Delhi (DEL) aborted takeoff due to a technical fault, resulting in a delay of over nine hours.

Passengers reported a sudden halt during taxiing and were confined inside the aircraft for nearly an hour before being deplaned.

Additionally, a Raipur-bound IndiGo flight 6E7295 from Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR) returned shortly after takeoff on detecting a technical fault. The pilot opted to turn back after covering approximately 60 nautical miles, prioritizing safety.

These recurring incidents underline the importance of rigorous maintenance checks and highlight the operational challenges airlines face while ensuring aircraft safety.
