When Władysław Łokietek died on 2 March 1333, many of the nobles had concerns about his son's accession to the Polish throne. The young man was seen as a alternatively weak candidate for the king's crown. Many considered him a coward, as well as an affairer who was more curious in women than in politics.
First of all, he was accused of escaping the battlefield with the Teutonic Knights under the Ships in 1331. That case has not yet been resolved. It is not known whether it was a real escape or a fake escape, consistent with the general plan of the battle.
There was besides a scandal on the Prince's reception, which he participated in in 1329 during his visit to the Hungarian court of his sister Elizabeth. There he seduced the noble female Clara Zach. erstwhile the case came to light, the girl's angry father made an unsuccessful effort on the Hungarian queen, for which he was sentenced to death in torment.

The solemn anointing and imposition of the crown in Wawel Cathedral was performed by Archbishop Janisław of Gniezno on 25 April 1333. The young ruler was faced with serious tasks, but he did great. Therefore, he was the only Polish king to receive the nickname “The Great”.
