The wave of anti-Americanism in Europe revives, and along with it the erstwhile left-wing resentiments. erstwhile crypto-communists who hid sickles and hammers to the couch, as well as those official, like representatives of the Communist organization of France, rise their heads again. In the face of trade tensions between the EU and the US, French left-wing politicians do not hide outrage against free trade businessmen.
Macron vs. USA, Communists vs. Arnault
French president Emmanuel Macron urges national companies to refrain from investing in the United States. Meanwhile, Secretary General of the French Communist organization (FPK) Fabien Roussel went 1 step further, accusing Bernard Arnault, a billionaire and head of LVMH, of betraying France's interests.
Roussel powerfully criticized Arnault's call for a "amicable" solution to trade disputes between the EU and the US, calling it "dangerous" and "sold to Americans". Interestingly, akin charges have not been made against businessmen holding interests with Russia – among left-wing activists abruptly silence.
Free trade or economical colonization?
Bernard Arnault, whose LVMH group draws 25% of U.S. marketplace revenue, openly supported the thought of a free trade area between the EU and the US. His position coincides with Elon Musk's opinion, which expressed his hope in April of abolishing duties between Europe and North America.
For French communists and parts of the Greens, however, it is treason. Manon Aubry of the left-wing organization La France Insoumise (LFI) stated that Arnault's proposal was "the worst consequence to Trump's trade war" and would mean "the end of French agriculture and industry". Aubry besides recalled that Arnault participated in the inauguration of Donald Trump in 2017, which in her opinion proves that he "does not defend France's interests".
Will Europe choose isolation?
While any European politicians search to tighten the course towards the US, businessmen like Arnault or Musk see the future in cooperation. Brussels is looking for a compromise, peculiarly in the context of the German car industry, but, as the head of LVMH points out, solutions are besides needed for French winemakers and another sectors.
Will Europe decision towards protectionism or open up to free trade? 1 thing is certain – erstwhile communists and their allies do not intend to let go of the fight against "American domination".
