Farmers protest in Germany

Anna Brylka: German farmers have been protesting since mid-December 2023 mainly due to plans by the government to liquidate agricultural fuel subsidies in 2024. German hosts besides dislike excessive imports of cereals from Ukraine, which besides hits their farms.

Meanwhile, the German government is under tremendous pressure. It lacks many billions of euros after the Constitutional Court questioned the usage of money for climate purposes, which was initially intended to be utilized to combat the effects of the pandemic. This ruling led to a giant budget hole.

Scholza's office tries to patch it up in many ways, including raising taxes for farmers, for example, a taxation on agricultural vehicles. All these factors have led to today's protest, which is supported by European farmers, despite regular competition on the EU market.
