A Cruel Revenge

As we remember, Hreidgotaland is under Hun rule:

Near the Vistula Forest they defended the old homesteads from the army of Attila

Meanwhile, months, years... And there was another tension in the relations between the Hreidgots of Gjukung and Atlim (Attila). For Gunnar decided to marry another of Atli’s sisters, Oddrun. But Atli refused his request for the hand of the Oderuna. And the feeling between Gudrun and Oddrun must have been sincere. Lovers began to meet secretly, as the song reports Drought Crying (Oddrúnar grátr):

We had no power of love to resist,
I bowed my head to my lover's chest;
Many of my relatives told each other,
That they saw us together.

Atli said he made me responsible
For my mistake and crime,
But no 1 can justice another
Where love settles.

Atli sent his messengers
It's due to the dark grace to track me down.
They amazed us erstwhile they weren't expected to.
We utilized to tuck in the sheets.

We wanted to give them gold rings,
So they don't tell Atlie anything,
But they rushed back,
To tell Atlie everything.

Atli decided to lure Gunnar and Högni to himself and destruct here. Here's a fragment. Songs of Atlim (Atlakvida):

Atli sent Gunnar—a long time ago—
An experienced husband, Knefröd was named;
He came to the country of Gjuka, to Gunnara Castle,
He's having a good drink on the bench close the fire.

They drank the knights of the dawn—but the traitors kept silent—
They drank wine in the common area – they feared the wrath of the Huns;
Knefröd yet started talking, coolly,
Husband from the South – sat on a advanced bench:

“Atli sent me here
The horse bit the fork while I was driving through the wild,
To ask you, Gunnar, to sit on his benches,
I want you chiefs to go to Atli's.

The shields will choose for you, the grottoes smoothed,
Goldfish, Huns,
Silver woven hats, oxen shirts,
The spears, the pikes, and the steeds bite.

The area will give you infinite Gnitaheida,
Strains of chaotic sound, and steves of gold,
Precious jewels, and Danpru city,
And the celebrated cow, what Myrkwid is called."

Gunnar turned his head to Högnie, saying:
What do you think, brother, erstwhile you hear all this?
Gold on Gnitaheidi – I know – there is not so much
How much we own.

We have 7 storehouses full of swords,
Each 1 of them has a good handle,
My rumac is the best, my sword is the sharpest,
The arches are benches of ornament, armor of gold,
My scum is the whitest,
captured in the castle of Kiara [i.e. the Roman Emperor],
1 of mine is better than the Huns all.”

Gudrun tried to inform her brothers of danger. She sent them a sign to inform them. Here's another passage. Songs of Atlim:

Högni said:
“What a female meant erstwhile she sent the ring
Wolves' tails? I think it's a warning.
The wolf's hair was around the golden ring;
The wolf destiny awaits us erstwhile we go.”

His relatives and relatives didn't encourage him,
Not trusted counselors, not mighty and great;
Gunnar called himself the king's man,
large in the hall, with a loud voice:

"Arise, Fjörnir, send gold cups full,
Let the husbands walk around in the hall from hand to hand.

[...]

The wolves will regulation the Niflung heritage,
Old grey hair erstwhile Gunnar's gone,
The snow bears will teardrop apart
Peaceful habitat erstwhile Gunnar does not return".

So, despite the warning, the Gjukungs decided to visit Atli. Another passage from Songs of Atlim reports:

They brought out the ruler of the faithful subjects
Crying, heroic, of the Niflung castle;
Högni's youngest boy said:
"Healthy and hopeful go where destiny leads you."

When the Gjukungs arrived at Atli's court, they were ambushed. They were captured and destroyed. Högnie's heart was slaughtered alive and Gunnar was thrown into a cave with vipers.

In Gudrun, she began to mature the thought of revenge on Atlim. And revenge proved unimaginable in its cruelty erstwhile she murdered her children, which she had with Atlim, she gave him meat to eat. And erstwhile this catchy ate, not realizing that he was eating his own children, Gudrun, laughing at him mockingly, she stabbed him in the heart. Let us see how the author described this gruesome scene AtlakvidY:

Mrs. Bialyst [...]
[...] served a stunning beverage;
A Terrifying Horror erstwhile Disgusted
She chose the bites of light king, mockingly said:

“You, Lord of swords, your own sons
Hearts, blood broke, with honey you ate;
Now you can digest food from human dead bodies,
You, brave – and go to the outhouse!

You'll never ask again, excited and merry,
Sons, Erpa and Eitil, to sit on your lap,
You'll never see the mediate of the area again.
The tiny gold spreaders of the caves on the trees plant;
How the manes cut, how the horses ride.”

The cry rose from the benches, the horror full of the song of the husbands,
The weeping under the golden delicacies cried to the boy of the Huns.
Only 1 Gudrun didn't mourn
Neither brothers as strong as bears nor sons
Little, silly, what she had with Atlim.

With gold, Gudrun, like a white goose, of course,
with the golden rings of the household,
destiny lets it grow, shining crushes pour,
She spared nothing but temple vaults.

He was careless, Atli was drinking crazy,
He had no weapons, he did not fear Gudrun;
frequently it was better to have fun – in the past – erstwhile you were tender
They hugged in front of the dawn.

She gave blood to drink.
execution with a greedy hand; she let the dogs off the chain,
She cast out the gate, awakened the household—

Paying for the brothers with the sails.
She gave everyone in the hall to the flames
What after Gunnar's execution from Myrkheim Borough came back,
The Budlung castle burned down,
The armed virgins burned, destroyed in the heat.

An equally suggestive description of this terrible crime, as we would describe today, we find in Greenland Song of Atlim (Atlamál en Grönlenzku), according to which any time passed between killing children and killing Atli:

Gudrun said,
"I gotta take the decision – go and say;
She won't hide Grimhilda's daughter from you,
It won't make you happy if you learn everything:
You brought large defeat upon yourself erstwhile you killed my brothers.

I haven't slept much since they died;
I've threatened revenge, now I'll remind you;
In the morning you brought me news – I remember well –
And now it is evening – you will experience the same.

The closest of your household you have lost [...]
[...] what should never have happened,
From their skulls you had beer bowls,
I made a soda so I mixed them with blood.

I took their hearts and baked them on a corner,
And then I handed it to you, and I said,
You've done everything you can. You haven't left anyone.
You chewed with your large fangs.

So you found out about the kids:
It's the worst thing anyone wants.
Part of the responsibility is mine – but I do not boast about it.”

Atli said,
“You are cruel, Gudrun! That you have done specified a deed,
That your children's blood was in my drink,
You have robbed your own sons of life—this is the last of everything—
You do not give me remainder in the midst of misfortune.”

Gudrun said,
“I would like to kill you more than anyone,
Even the worst thing you can do is not bad enough.
You have committed atrocities and crimes—
There is no equal in the world.”

Atli said,
"You should be stoned and burned at the stake,
Then you will accomplish something she has always asked for.”

Gudrun said,
"Have specified problem next day morning,
But I will have a better journey to the another world.”

They lived with each another hostilely,
The haters sent each another words, they both felt bad,
In enmity, Hniflung grew up, pondered the large deeds,
He told Gudrun he had hatred for Atli.
She had in constant memory what Högni suffered,
She showed the fame she would accomplish through revenge;
Atli was killed – it was not essential to wait long –
Högni's boy killed and Gudrun killed herself.

After Attila's death, his sons began to wage war on their father's legacy. erstwhile Ardaryk found out about it, the first 1 rose against them. Jordanes wrote about it:

“He has achieved a successful goal. He washed distant the old disgrace of submission. By separating himself from the Huns, he freed the native tribe as much as another oppressed strains. For everyone is willing to cooperate in the action taken for the common good. They'll defend each other's destruction. The conflict takes place in Panonia, on the Nedao River. There are different tribes over which Attila held power.”

The conflict of the Nedao River ended with the defeat of the Huns, after which they never rose again...
