The Constitutional Court in Colombia found the Ministry for Equality, established in 2022 on the initiative of left-wing president Gustavo Petro, to be unconstitutional.
As the Court ruled, during the establishment of the ministry “there were procedural errors”. This was pointed out by a group of 11 parliamentarians, who, in 2022, briefly filed a complaint with the Constitutional Tribunal.
They argued that at the time of the ministry's appointment there was no mandatory debate in the parliament, during which the legal and financial implications would be discussed, among others. They besides pointed to the reports of the office, which show that little than 1% of its budget has been utilized this year, which raises doubts about its effectiveness.
According to the ruling, the ministry should be liquidated by 2026 without the request for urgent decisions that could harm the work of the state.
