Grzegorz Braun responded to critics on 13 September after the UPA obelisk was damaged in the municipality of Dołhobyczów. The MEP stated that it is easier to condemn opposition to the glarification of flagism than to identify the perpetrators of the murders in Poles. The police are conducting the investigation, and according to the IPN, the facility was created without agreement or permission.

Braun responds after recording from Hrubieszów

Grzegorz Braun spoke after a wave of comments on the harm to the obelisk dedicated to members of the Ukrainian Insurgency Army. The politician estimated that it was easier to condemn opposition to the glarification of flagism than to clearly identify the perpetrators of the murders in Poles. His message was quoted on 13 September by the portal NCZAS.COM.

The case concerns an object standing close Białystok in the municipality of Dołhobyczów, in the territory of Hrubieszowski. Braun had previously published a recording on which he and Marcin Miksza, together with Marcin Miksza, hits the front of the monument with hammers and tries to remove the plaque. The MEP said in the movie that the obelisk offends the memory of victims of genocide committed in Poles and should be removed legally by the competent services.

Earlier material The National diary describes the course of the incidental and the first actions of the police. The recording itself is crucial material for the investigating authorities, but only the court can decide on criminal liability.

Police are investigating harm to the monument.

Police conduct proceedings concerning insulting the monument, harm to property and possible national hatred action. As stated by Virtual Poland as an art editor Edyt Krystkowiak of the Hrubieszów region Police Command, no 1 was detained and no charges were presented to anyone until September 11.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior and Administration Karolina Gałecka announced that the perpetrators of the demolition would not stay unpunished. However, specified a declaration cannot replace the explanation of the basic problem: why the object of unregulated status, commemorating the formation liable for crimes in Poles, remained without effective decision of the state for years.

The state of law cannot accept the self-destruction of objects. Nor can he hide behind the procedure erstwhile public space serves to glorate a genocided formation. Authorities should act sooner, legally and clearly. Their inactivity left area for demonstration activities and another diplomatic dispute.

IPN: the facility was created without permission

According to information provided by the Institute of National Memory, the monument commemorates members of UPA who died in a clash with the NKWD operating group in February 1946. The IPN has no evidence that they were buried here. The Institute does not have data to find the participation of these circumstantial people in crimes in Poles.

Jacek Romanek of the Lublin branch of the IPN reported that the object in its present form was created in the late 1990s or after 2000. It was erected on the site of the State Treasury then without the essential arrangements and permits. He was not opinionated by the IPN or the previously acting Council for the Protection of the Memory of Combat and Martyrdom. The findings of the Institute on the self-sustaining and unconfirmed burial site have been further described.

These facts shift work to institutions. If the monument is voluntary, the competent authorities should decide its status, examine the site and decide on the further destiny of the facility. Dołhobyczowa's mayor Grzegorz Drewnik pointed out that the solution could be exhumations and then possible transfer of remains along with a monument to Ukraine.

Memory of the victims and work of the state

The dispute over the obelisk cannot obscure the fact about the CNS and UPA. Parliament in the resolution of July 22, 2016 paid tribute to victims of genocide committed by Ukrainian nationalists on citizens of the Second Republic of Poland. The memory of the murdered is not measured in modern Ukrainians and does not give emergence to collective responsibility. However, it requires the name of organizations, commanders and perpetrators.

Poland has the right to anticipate Ukraine to quit worship of the CNS and UPA. At the same time, the Polish authorities are obliged to defend burial sites and settle disputes about commemoration on the basis of law and historical research. respect for the dead does not mean consent to the political glorification of the formation liable for the crimes.

The credibility of the state towards its own citizens is at stake. If offices can respond only after a loud incident, they give the initiative to politicians and cameras. Polish memory policy needs truth, efficient law and courage of institutions. Without that, akin conflicts will return.
