The first episode of the documentary series ‘Neighbours. Last Witnesses of Ukrainian genocide in Poles” directed by Jack Międlar wins further global awards. After winning Audience awards at the global movie Festival “Maximilia” and nomination for the main prize for the best documentary movie at the prestigious festival in Vienna, production received an honorary award at the east European movie Festival.
The series, addressing the tragic events related to the genocide carried out in Poles by Ukrainians in 1939-1947, met with large interest of both viewers and the jury of global movie festivals. The first episode, focusing on the accounts of the last surviving witnesses of these events, gained designation for the documentary qualities, historical evidence and courage of the subject.
– Winners in festivals mostly do not affect financial gratuities. The film's budget is covered by donations from my Viewers and Readers and by the sale of my first books. However, honoring this movie production is of large importance in the issue of spreading the fact about Ukrainian genocide in Poles, due to the fact that filmmakers from many European countries participate in movie shows. Each purchased DVD with the first episode of the series in 8 language versions, VOD access is purchase of my books is simply a real support to the production that no 1 else has undertaken before, no government or non-governmental organization. In order to carry out almost 80 interviews with the Witnesses of genocide, I have traveled tens of thousands of kilometres, and I know that this is the last minute to immortalize a will that needs to be spread, and which the Witnesses of Ukraine want to leave to us eyewitnesses of crimes in Poles – comments Jacek Międlar, manager and screenwriter of the series.
The culmination of this year's festival series in which “Neighbours” were nominated for the main prize, will be gala in Vienna, scheduled for December 2025. It will feature screenings of films nominated for the main award. Then the results will besides be announced and it will be revealed whether the first episode of Jack Międlar's show will scope for the most crucial award of the festival.
