AHMEDABAD— Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD), Ahmedabad has opened a new Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT) designed to handle 200,000 tonnes of cargo annually, a fourfold increase from its earlier capacity of 50,000 tonnes.

The terminal, covering 20,000 square meters, is expected to support the growing logistics demand from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. With modern screening systems, controlled access, and CCTV surveillance, the facility provides enhanced security and efficiency for cargo operations at SVPI Airport (AMD).

The ICT represents a major upgrade to Ahmedabad’s cargo handling ecosystem.

Automated systems like Number Plate Recognition at truck gates, barcode-based tracking, and handheld terminal (HHT) operations ensure real-time monitoring and greater transparency for stakeholders.

The shift from manual-heavy processes to automated ones reduces delays and strengthens cargo integrity throughout the supply chain.

Beyond security and speed, the facility has been designed with flexibility in mind. High dock counts, ball transfer decking, and automation allow the terminal to manage peak loads without bottlenecks.

This positions Ahmedabad (AMD) as a stronger regional hub for both domestic and international cargo movements.

Cold Chain and Specialized Handling

A dedicated cold chain zone at the ICT ensures perishable goods maintain product integrity. This is crucial for pharmaceuticals, food items, and other temperature-sensitive products.

The facility is equipped to handle a wide range of commodities, including e-commerce parcels, automotive parts, engineering goods, garments, and chemicals.

Special cargo categories such as live animals, oversized equipment, valuables, and high-value electronics also have designated handling provisions. This makes the terminal suitable for both established trade sectors and emerging industries reliant on efficient logistics.

Supporting Trade and Economic Growth

The enhanced capacity comes at a time when Gujarat’s manufacturing and export industries are expanding. Pharmaceuticals, engineering products, and garments continue to be among the top international exports routed through SVPI Airport (AMD).

By accommodating diverse cargo types and larger volumes, the new ICT strengthens Ahmedabad’s role in India’s trade network.

The investment aligns with India’s broader push to modernize its aviation infrastructure and support multimodal logistics. As demand from exporters and e-commerce operators grows, Ahmedabad’s upgraded cargo terminal ensures the region is well-prepared to handle the next phase of trade and economic growth.
